GEOMATH AS ART

Geomath is a term I have used to represent the congruence of geometry and mathematics. Some apply the term geomathematics to geometry of the earth sciences. I have had a broader definition in mind.

Geometry has its own soul. It lives in form. Some may argue that geometry is a subset of mathematics. Others could equally say that mathematics sprung from the geometry of building structures and dividing land. They are of different realms. They can both represent the same entity, yet express it in the language of their world. Perhaps there are other realms as well, worlds where the tools of our perception as yet tread unawares.

What is the nature of that which both represent?

For several years I offered my geometric wireframes at art fairs and math conferences. Mathematicians and scientists admired them as art. At art fairs, the uninitiated said, "That won't go with my kitchen".

Ouch. So art is a point of view. A human point of view and a personal one at that.

Here is a formula that I stumbled upon and find pleasing to look at in its own right. I liked it well enough to render, print and frame two of its apparitions. I do not wish to imply anything supernatural by this term. It is just that the rendering of an equation is only one of limitless possibilities. Two are given here for your inspection, both of the same formula. Many of the formulae and images of the licosas (in the Unit of Universe series) are examples of congruences of mathematics and geometry also. You may have favorites of your own as well.

The formula in spherical coordinates:
r = u
theta = 2 pi u
phi = pi sin(2 pi v)/ 2n
The ranges:
u:0 to l
v:0 to l
n= 0.618 (reciprocal of the golden section)
